Combi vs System Boiler: Pros, Cons, and When to Choose Each

Combi versus system boiler is the most common South African heating-replacement question. Both work; both have failure modes. Choosing well depends on hot water demand, mains pressure, and household routines.

Combi (combination) boiler

Single unit produces space heating and instant hot water on demand. No hot water cylinder needed.

Strengths

  • Compact — saves cupboard space
  • Instant hot water (no waiting for cylinder)
  • Lower install cost
  • No standing heat loss from cylinder

Weaknesses

  • Flow rate limited to mains pressure × boiler capacity
  • Struggles with multiple simultaneous outlets (shower + bath)
  • Mains pressure dependency
  • Replacement parts often more expensive

System boiler with cylinder

Boiler heats water for a separate unvented cylinder that stores hot water at mains pressure.

Strengths

  • High flow rate at multiple outlets simultaneously
  • Less mains pressure sensitive
  • Better for households with 2+ bathrooms
  • More flexibility with solar thermal or heat pump integration

Weaknesses

  • Requires space for cylinder (typically airing cupboard or utility)
  • Higher install cost
  • Standing heat loss from cylinder
  • Hot water runs out if cylinder depletes

Decision matrix

  • 1-bathroom flat, good mains pressure: combi
  • 2-bedroom house, single bathroom: combi
  • 3-bed house with 1.5 bathrooms: combi if budget tight, system if usage simultaneous
  • 4+ bedroom, multiple bathrooms: system + cylinder
  • Low mains pressure: system (or combi with accumulator)
  • Planning a heat pump in future: system + cylinder (heat pumps don't suit combi configuration)

Cost comparison

  • Combi boiler install: R44,000–R90,000
  • System + unvented cylinder: R70,000–R150,000

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a magnetic filter?

Yes — boiler warranties typically require one. R4,000–R8,000 installed.

How long should a boiler last?

10–15 years typical for combis; 15–20 for system boilers with cylinder.
