Low water pressure ruins showers, hampers combi boilers, and limits whole-house plumbing options. Diagnosing the cause — and knowing whose problem it is — saves both money and frustration.
What is acceptable pressure?
South African water utilities must provide a minimum 7m static head (~0.7 bar) at the boundary stopcock. Most areas achieve 1.5–3.5 bar dynamic.
Diagnosing
Test pressure
Fit a pressure gauge to your outside tap. Test:
- Static (no flow) — should match supply pressure
- Dynamic (running) — drop indicates restriction
Check flow rate
Time how long to fill a 10L bucket from the kitchen cold tap. 30+ seconds suggests a flow problem; under 15 seconds is good.
Common causes
Internal restriction
- Service pipe (mains to house) — older lead or galvanised pipes accumulate restriction
- Kitchen tap aerator clogged with limescale
- Internal stopcock not fully open
- Pressure-reducing valve set too low
External
- Supply pipe collapse or partial blockage
- Inadequate mains in area (rural, end of run)
- Water company maintenance reducing pressure temporarily
Solutions
Service pipe replacement
Replace old lead/galvanised pipe from stopcock to house with modern MDPE. Typical cost R12,000–R36,000 depending on length.
Boost pump
Cold water booster set increases incoming pressure. Cost R18,000–R50,000 install.
Accumulator vessel
Pressurised vessel stores water, releases at boost. Provides high peak flow without continuous boosting. R30,000–R70,000.
Reduce demand
Flow-restricting aerators on basin and bath taps allow basic plumbing to satisfy multiple outlets at lower flow.
Water company duties
If pressure at your boundary stopcock is below 0.7 bar minimum, your water company must investigate. Report and demand action.

Can low pressure damage my boiler?
Combis specifically need adequate flow — low pressure can prevent ignition or cause overheating.
Will a booster pump void my insurance?
No, but it must comply with water regulations and ideally be installed by a WRAS-approved fitter.
